Our system is based around three time tested concepts that have been proven profitable time and again.
Crossbreeding:
This is about the only subject you will get the major breed associations to agree on. It pays...if done right. F1 females outproduce the best of purebreds in productivity over there lifetime in every study I've seen, up to 25%. Some research
shows increases of $50-$100 per cow per year. We are dedicated to crossbreeding. We focus on producing F1 females and the little extra you pay for her now will pay off big down the road. Two thirds of the crossbreeding benefit is in the crossbred cow, just having a bull of a different breed will get you only a few dollars more. I know far too many commercial producers running straitbred cows, working very hard, and leaving all that money on the table. Doing crossbreeding right means planning several generations down the road. We will be happy to help you come up with a plan to maximize and maintain heterosis, even if that means sending you a different breeder.
Genetics based on indexes and efficiency data:
We base our breeding decisions on real data compiled by the associations we work with. In the Simmental
breed that means API (all purpose index) and TI (terminal index) API is a calculation of the dollar return on a customer who uses Simmental bulls on Angus cows,
and keeps replacement females. TI is based on those who do not keep replacements. [ EPDs and $ Indexes Defined ] These are a main concern when making decisions as well as keeping mature size and milk numbers in check.
Big cows rarely mean big profits. On the Angus side we put most selection pressure on feed efficiency, and also
the total profit index. You might not see a difference in a picture or in the pasture, but you sure will on your balance sheet with efficient, profitable cattle.
Low input management:
A penny saved is a penny earned. I am a minimalist when it comes to inputs. It's easy to find a seedstock producer with state of
art facilities where theiranimals are given every opportunity to succeed. We give ours every opportunity to fail, therefore the lesser individuals fail here,
not at your farm after the sale. Iput my time and money into producing top quality hay and pasture offer no creep, no silage, and very rarely grain. As Kit
Pharo says about growth, "we breed it in, not feed it in". Rotational grazing is a major part of this type of management, you should be able to increase
your pasture's production per acre by 100% or more. See our links, it works. [ click here to go the Education Center page ]
